Appearance: Ryuk stands at 6 feet tall, has a broad chest, thin waist and long legs. He also has dark black wings and grey skin. His hair is dark blue and, in deviance of gravity, stands up (not spiked up as if by gel, it just does that naturally). He has blue lips, the corners of which draw up his face in what looks like a perpetual grin of amusement. He has large yellow eyes and a flat nose.
What must be called clothing is a shirt the color of his hair, the collar of which appears stitched to his skin- perhaps it is just a different skin, perhaps not, but it gives Ryuk the appearance of a Frankansteinian monster. Around his hips is a short blue-black grass-skirt like apparal, and then same colored leggings. On his shoulders and around his neck are long blue-black fringes, much like his "skirt". Haning from his left ear is a silver dangling heart earring; on right wrist is a thick silver bracelet, while on the other wrist is a thin silver band. On various fingers are silver rings. On his hips he wears a thick belt with silver accents and from which hang two chais on either side. On his left side is a longer chain and from this hangs his Death Note.
Overall, Ryuk is a scary sight...for those who can see him.
Personality: Ryuk is somewhat of an oddity among Shinigamis. Like all in the Shinigami Realm, he has found that there is little to do with his existence except gamble. Many complain about the boredom, but Ryuk decides to do something about it. This indicates a desire to do away with boredom and a willingness to do a little work for entertainment. He tricks the Shinigami King into letting him have two notebooks- therefore, he is somewhat devious and crafty. He writes the basic rules of the Death Note into the front cover prior to dropping the notebook, and chooses English for the language he writes in- he has knowledge of the human world and he thinks ahead.
Once the notebook is picked up by Light, however, Ryuk is more than willing to just follow Light around and watch him use the notenook- therefore he's not entirely against doing nothing, as long as he isn't *bored*. He is amused he way humans are, often laughing when Light is in a predicament but curious to see how Light gets himself out of it. He has no sympathy for Light, no desire to help him in any way- Ryuk is merely an observer of humans, interested in the way they interact.
He loves apples and video games. He gets annoyed when Light ignores him. He proves incompetent at times, telling Light things about the Death Note as the idea comes to him and not all at once when they met- such as warning Light that anyone who touches the Death Note will see Ryuk only *after* he carelessly hid it from his sister in a desk drawer, or mentioning the Shinigami Eye deal only after a few weeks with Light. Light even discovers new things about the Death Note that Ryuk didn't even know about.
Abilities/Strengths: Ryuk is a Shinigami, which means he has a Death Note within which writing a person's name kills them. He has wings and can fly. He has eyes that show him every single person's name and lifespan. Also, he's invisible to anyone who has not touched the Death Note. If he is eating an apple, however, anyone can see that apple floating, apparently, in midair. Also, he cannot be killed by bullets or weapons- there is only one way to kill a Shinigami and that is by having them kill in order to prolong a human's life. that defeats the Shinigami's purpose, and therefore breaks the rules. Since Ryuk is apathetic when it comes to all humans, this is something that he would never do, and therefore he is invincible.
Weapons: The Death Note. However, it is a weapon he would not use in Econtra- he would much rather watch the humans' interactions and would be more than entertained upon seeing so many Kiras walking about to want to interfere in any way.
Weaknesses: As mentioned before, Ryuk is rather incompetent when it comes to giving out information. This gets on Light's nerves a lot of the time.
Ryuk needs apples like a human craves cigarettes- if he goes too long without them, he'll turn upside and twist into a pretzal, which is his way of going into withdrawl.

History: It all started when Ryuk tricked Shidoh, a fellow Shinigami, into giving Ryuk his Death Note. All Shinigami have one note; none are supposed to have two, but Ryuk managed to get another one. Inside that note he copied down the main rules in how to use the Death Note and then went down to the human world and dropped it there. You see, he was utterly bored with his world and thought that dropping a Death Note amongst humans would be something interesting to watch for a little bit.
As luck would have it, Light Yagami picked up the Death Note and started to purge the world of evil with it. After five days, Ryuk descended to the human world and found Light. He explained that he was bound to the notebook and would have to follow Light everywhere. After the initial shock of an otherworldly creature talking to him went away, Light accepted Ryuk as his invisible companion and Ryuk settled in to watch what played out next.
The mysterious deaths among criminals was noticed world-wide and soon enough Light was challenged by a detective named L, who declared "Kira" (as the murderer was being called) to be evil. L declared that he would find Kira and bring him to justice; Light accepted his challenge and Ryuk was amused. Humans were so much more entertaining than Shinigami- amongst the latter it didn't matter much killing humans, but among humans they got so worked up about it! Ryuk watched the battle of wits between L and Kira commence, offering Light a few tidbits of information now and then- such as the time an FBI agent was tailing him, though that was only because Ryuk felt uncomfortable being "watched", mentioning the Shinigami eye deal as a way to make killing easier for Light. But for the most part, his role was to watch...that, and eat many many apples.
At one point in the battle between Light and L, Ryuk had to leave the human world when Light buried the Death Note and gave up his memories and ownership of the note. But while in the Shinigami realm, he stilled watched the battle rage on, interested to see how Light would win. When his Death Note was claimed by human hands again, he returned to that world and discovered the second Kira, Amane Misa, was now the owner of his Death Note and that she was the one he would be haunting. He followed her as she and Light slowly took over the world with their power, ever the silent observer.
And then...Shidoh appeared. He was dying and needed to write a name in his Death Note in order to save himself...but Ryuk had taken his notebook! Ryuk, not wanting Light to know he was interfering in any way, told the Shinigami where his Death Note was- at the time, in the hands of Mello and the mafia. Shidoh left to get his note back and Ryuk thought that was the last he would see of him...but then the stupid Shinigami messed with Light's plans to retrieve the Death Note, thereby revealing his presence. Light came up with a plan, however, to get the note back and prevent Shidoh from interfering and this plan involved Ryuk. Since he would get to see something exciting by helping, Ryuk agreed to the plan. It was successful, and Light was right- it was exciting.
After that, Ryuk went back to his role as observer and soon found himself haunting a new Kira- Mikami Teru. Ryuk spent most of his time with Light and the police task force, however, since they were in possession of a Death Note now as well (a result of the aforementioned plan). And so it came to pass that Ryuk was there when Light was finally revealed for the murderer he was. In a desperate last act, Light begged Ryuk to kill Near and his followers and all the task force.
Instead, Ryuk wrote one name- Yagami Light. When they had first met he told Light that he would be the one to write Light's name down...and so he did. It had been fun, but he was not going to sacrifice his life for Light's. Of course, it was a pity it had ended at last...
...only it hadn't. For when Near used the notebook to kill Amane Misa a few months later, Ryuk came back to the human world and has been following this new Kira ever since. At least, until he was one day pulled into Econtra...
